Google’s Book Scanning Technology

Google’s mission statement has been to organize the world’s information and the world has a ton of information stuck in non-digital formats like books. For a few years they’ve been working on scanning in books, scanning in over 7 million. A patent application gave the rough idea of how they’re doing it, but researchers at the University of Tokyo have reproduced the technology and have some more information than the original patent article.

Basically, they have two high-speed cameras that catch images of the page at a high rate of speed. A third camera captures an IR grid pattern that can be used to deduce the curvature of the page and correct via image processing algorithms. Now that’s some really cool tech!
