Cheap 3d Scanner for the Masses?


A co-worker pointed out this link to me about a month ago. It is a research project to use a webcam and some sophisticated image recognition and tracking algorithms to allow someone to digitize an object. Take a look at the article below:

In watching the video, you can see that there is still a good chunk of work to do. There are several odd artifacts and the reproduction isn’t 100% accurate. Still, this is a great first start. Imagine combining this with an iPhone camera and automatically uploading the contents to a server somewhere like the Google 3D Warehouse.
